Airports

Spain has several international airports available for you to choose from. For Sierra Nevada, the nearest and most convenient airport is Granada which receives direct flights from the UK with RyanAir.

Malaga is the next most convenient airport, although it is perfectly feasible to fly into Seville, Jerez, Almeria, Alicante, Murcia and even Madrid airports. The roads in Spain these days are generally very good and extremely well signed. Getting to Sierra Nevada is easier by car than by public transport.

To help you plan your route please refer to the following directions from the various airport options:

Airport Name

Approx. Time to Resort

Granada

45 - 60 minutes

On leaving the airport, you will be filtered directly on to the motorway, (A92) - turn right, in the direction of Granada, NOT Malaga! On reaching the motorway, keep in the right-hand lane as it will almost immediately filter off to the right - signed "Santa Fe" & "Sierra Nevada".

From here continue along the dual-carriageway through Santa Fe and a BP petrol station on the left hand side, ultimately reaching the Granada bypass motorway with clear signs to Sierra Nevada highlighted in brown.

Malaga

2 Hours

Leave the airport, initially following directions to Motril along the N340. A short while afterwards, whilst rounding Malaga city, take the turnoff for Antequera onto the N331. From here the road winds up through the Malaga hills and after several miles, as you climb to a brow, there are clear signs to Granada branching off onto the A359 and then the A92.

NOTE: Look out for the slip road just after passing the Granada airport turnoff. This is signed to "Santa Fe" and "Sierra Nevada".

See the final paragraph under directions from Granada airport for the remaining directions...

Seville

3 Hours

Take the A92 following signs to Antequera and Granada. Avoid taking the N-IV to Cordoba! Once you have reached Antequera continue following signs for Granada.

See the "NOTE" section under directions from Malaga airport for the remainder of the journey.

Jerez De La Frontera

3.5 Hours

Look for signs to Arcos de la Frontera on the A382. This will take you via Olvera and Campillos before reaching Antequera from where there are clear signs to Granada.

See the "NOTE" section under directions from Malaga airport for the remainder of the journey.

NOTE: From Cadiz the most direct and fastest route would be to take the motorway to Jerez and follow the above directions, rather than following the coastal road via Gibraltar, Marbella and Malaga. This will add approximately another 20 minutes to the journey time. The coastal route mentioned would take approximately 4.5 - 5 hours depending on the traffic which can get congested at times.

Alicante

3.5 Hours (Via the A7)

Follow signs to Murcia from where it is signed to Granada and Almeria along the N340.

Follow the road past Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras until the motorway splits. Keep right following signs to Granada. DO NOT go to Almeria! You will now be on the A92 which will take you directly to Granada via Guadix.

NOTE: Once you approach Granada you will need to take the Granada/Jaen turnoff. Take care here as it is a split junction and comes upon you quickly if you are not paying close attention. The first slip road heads on to Jaen whilst the second, (some 100 metres on), goes to Granada.

From here you will be taken onto the Granada bypass from where there are plenty of signs to Sierra Nevada.

Murcia

3 Hours

The N340 motorway is clearly signed to Granada and Almeria. Follow the directions given under the Alicante section.

Almeria

2.5 Hours

Follow the motorway north in the direction of Guadix. From here there are clear directions to Granada on the A92.

Follow the remaining directions as detailed under "NOTE" in the Alicante section above.

Madrid

4.5 Hours

Follow signs to the N-IV heading via Valdepeñas. Shortly after passing the very windy section through the "Despeñaperros" national park, which marks the boundary into Andalucia, you will approach Bailen. Here, keep a lookout for the turnoff to Jaén and Granada on the N323, (Autovia de Sierra Nevada). Be careful not to continue on to Córdoba!

From here, follow signs directly into Granada from where you will find clear signs to Sierra Nevada.
